If the story is told by one of the characters, does it help to make it more effective? Setting. Where does the story take place and when? Does the setting matter to the story, or could it have taken place equally well in some other place and at some other time? Language. What sort of language is used? Is it simple or elaborate? Is it plain or metaphorical? Does the language used give a narrative or dramatic effect? Grammar. What is the structure of the sentence? What tense forms and other morphological forms are used in the text? Figures of speech. What figures of speech, if any, are used in the text? What do they mean to you? What do they mean to the author?
