With the support of many university graduates, computer firms, Usenix, Linux Australia, the department was established in 2006, becoming the first department of the University of New South Wales, funded by contributions of graduates. In 1956, he joined IBM Research. After nearly a decade of gaining significant experience in various technical and managerial positions, he moved on to developing mainframes, including the IBM System / 360 Model 91 and their successors. After completing a 25-year career at IBM, Robert worked in the Storage Technology Corporation hatchery project to develop the first mainframe system based on CMOS; became a co-founder of NetFrame - a start-up in the mid-80s, worked on the creation of one of the first server systems based on microprocessors; and worked as a consultant on architecture and microarchitecture of the processor at Amdahl Consulting.
