With the support of many university graduates, computer firms, Usenix, Linux Australia, the department was established in 2006, becoming the first department of the University of New South Wales, funded by contributions of graduates. In 2009, Gernot Heiser (Gernot Heiser) took up the post of the first line professor.

In 1956, he joined IBM Research. After nearly a decade of gaining significant experience in various technical and managerial positions, he moved on to developing mainframes, including the IBM System / 360 Model 91 and their successors.
